| | General InformationLanguageThe official language is Turkish. English is widely spoken in major cities. CurrencyTurkish currency is the Turkish Lira, TL. Exchange rates are set daily by the Central Bank. TL is freely sold and bought in hotels, banks and special exchange offices called "döviz bürosu". Major credit cards including American Express, Diners, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted in large hotels, car rental companies and major stores. You will need cash (TL) to pay for taxi fares, restaurants and coffee shops. Car rental offices, hotels, above average restaurants, shops, travel agencies, gas stations will accept your credit cards. You can get cash with your credit card or cash card by using cash machines (ATM's) in bank buildings or street booths. Banks, government offices and majority of corporate offices open at 9 AM and close at 5 PM. Passport & VisasA valid passport is required for entry to Turkey. Citizens of a country which requires a visa for entry to Turkey are strongly advised to make their application in their home country at least one month before the intended date of travel. Visa Information Turkey is a non EU Member. A valid passport shall be required from the citizens of European Countries as well as from the citizens of other countries to enter the country. Visa application requirements for entry into Turkey will be posted on our website. The procedure is not difficult for European Countries. Upon request, official invitation letters will be prepared by Local Organizing Commitee.  ElectricityTurkey has 220 volts/50 Hz. electricity and socket type is European standard. (2-pin plug). Health ServicesCities and major touristic towns have a selection of private international and public hospitals with good standards. FoodAs with many Mediterranean nations Turkish food is very healthy, fresh and enjoyable. WaterTap water is chlorinated and, therefore, safe to drink. However, it is recommended that you consume bottled water, which is readily and cheaply available. CommunicationsIf your mobile phone does support such feature, your mobile phone shall automatically select the GSM operator. Public telephones operate with tokens or cards, sold at post offices or some booths. Through some of the public phones, there is access to AT&T and some other telecommunication networks - please check with your operator for the latest information. Fax messages can be sent from major post offices, or from the hotel. Turkey has three GSM operators, all of them offering 3G services and almost 95% coverage over the country. Internet service is available all around the country. Prepaid telephone cards are a convenient way to make domestic and international telephone calls from public phones. They can be purchased at convenience stores and from vending machines for approximately 10 Euro. There are four international phone companies and their rates vary.
